Gavin Maxwell was up in a small community in southwestern Scotland, where he developed an interest in nature. When he was an adult, he went on a tour of the reed marshes of Southern Iraq, he kept his passion for exploration alive. He captured an otter there and returned it to his isolated Scottish house of Sandaig.
