Sir Matt Busby by Rick Glanvill

This book looks at the life and work of Sir Matt Busby, one of the few great men produced by Britain's national game of football. A Scottish coal-miner's son, he created one of the most glorious and celebrated sporting institutions in the world. He built his first great team in the years after the war and immediately set about creating his second in the 1950s, the Busby Babes, composed of brilliant young players. In 1958, the team that captured the imaginations of millions with their unique brand of stylish football was tragically destroyed in the Munich air crash. Busby, gravely injured, was twice read the last rites, but managed to survive and return to Old Trafford to begin the process of re-building yet again. In the 1960s, Denis Law, Bobby Charlton and George Best stood at the centre of the club's comeback, and their names became synonymous with English football. In 1968, Manchester United became the first English side to win the European Cup. Later that year, Busby was knighted.
