This study of the classic spiritual disciplines includes meditation, prayer, fasting, study, simplicity, solitude, submission, service, confession, worship, guidance and celebration. The author claims that these disciplines can infuse life with joy, promoting inner peace and fulfilment. Richard Foster, an "evangelical" Quaker, founded and chairs the Milton Center which is designed to help Christian writers achieve exellence in their work. He won the 1978 Writer of the Year (US) Award for "Celebration of Discipline", and the Gold Medallion Award in 1982 for "Freedom of Simplicity" and he also wrote "Money, Sex and Power"

Richard Foster never wanted to have anything to do with God. He was one of the country's leading advertising photographers who became a top television commercial director, designing and producing international advertising for clients and agencies all over the world, and winning over 70 national awards including Clios, Mobius and Tellys. But God had plans for Richard and met him in the Gospel of John. After a period of teaching and pastoring he produced and directed his first feature film So This Is Christmas starring Eric Roberts and Vivica A. Fox. And while continuing to work in producing film, God led him to write this book.
