Henry Clay Frick, reviled in his own time, infamous in ours, was blamed for the Johnstown Flood (which killed 2,200 people) as well as the violent Homestead Strike of 1892, and survived an assassination attempt, yet at the same time was an ardent philanthropist, giving more than $100 million during his lifetime and in his will, while insisting on anonymity. Will Shortz has been the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times since 1993, and is the only academically accredited enigmatologist in the world, having earned a degree (following a major he designed himself) in enigmatology from Indiana University in 1974. In 1978, Mr. Shortz founded, and remains director of, the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, held annually. He is the current Puzzlemaster for Weekend Edition Sunday on National Public Radio.
