It ends with an account of the decline and fall of Rome, and the Roman legacy. In between, aspects of Roman life are looked at, including politics, religion, art, science and everyday life. This book forms part of a series of reference works which provide a major look at the way of life, beliefs and achievements of the ancient culture. Its emphasis is on primary source material, both textual and illustrative and numerous contemporary quotations offer insights into how life was actually lived.
Sean Sheehan has a degree in Ancient Literature and History. He is fascinated by all aspect of of the ancient world, and in particular the literature of ancient Greece and Rome. A visit to Auschwitz in the 1970s sparked off an interest in the history of the Jewish people and the Holocaust, and since then Sean has spent much time reading and researching the subject. He has also written two books for Hodder Wayland about the Holocaust.
