What Men Say by J Smith

WHAT MEN SAY is the gripping and complex new crime novel by one of the youngest and best crime writers of the 1990s. The third in the series featuring feisty yet cooly analytical Loretta Lawson, it is set in Oxford and London, among smart academics and upper class bohemia. The novel opens with a corpe discovered at a garden party in the Oxfordshire countryside, and the ingenious twists and turns of what follow manage to raise the profound theme of the 'abandoned woman' at the same time as being compulsive reading.
Joan Smith is the author of Misogynies, a collection of essays on woman-hating, and four novels featuring Loretta Lawson: A Masculine Ending, Don't Leave Me This Way, Why Aren't They Screaming? and What Men Say. The first two have been filmed for BBC television with Janet McTerr playing the role of Loretta. Joan Smith has also edited a collection of short stories, Femmes de Siecle, and is currently working on a book about food. She writes a monthly column in the Guardian, and contributes to the Independent on Sunday, the Observer and the Financial Times. Her fifth Loretta Lason novel, Full Stop, is published by Chatto & Windus.
