Award-winning travel writer, Julian Smith, knows the best way to experience Virginia from canoeing down the Great Dismal Swamp and hiking the Appalachian Trail to noshing at the Carytown Watermelon Festival. Every Moon guidebook includes recommendations for must-see sights and many regional, area, and city-centred maps. With guidance on exploring the deep forest of Douthat State Park and visiting the pretty gingerbread-like houses of Onancock, "Moon Virginia" gives travellers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience. With expert writers, first-rate strategic advice, and an essential does of humour, "Moon Handbooks" are the cure for the common trip."Moon Handbooks" aren't your average guides. For more than 30 years, these books have appealed to an eclectic group of travellers, from backpacking students to solo adventurers to families on vacation (and a budget). With expert writers delivering a mix of honest insight, first-rate strategic advice, and an essential dose of humour, "Moon Handbooks" ensure that travellers have an uncommon and entirely satisfying experience - and a few new stories to tell.
Days after wrangling a degree in biology from the University of Virginia, Julian Smith found himself hopelessly entangled in a self-publishing venture that resulted nine months later in the one-pound, eight-ounce On Your Own in El Salvador, the first in-depth guide to the country. Moon Handbooks Ecuador came two years later. Tired of sounding like a third-grader with grammar issues, Julian returned to Virginia, where everyone kept saying the same thing: "Didn't you graduate already?" After completing Moon Handbooks Virginia, he contributed to The Washington Post, National Geographic Traveller, Road Trip USA, Online Travel Planning for Dummies, and other publications. He has somehow earned a Masters' degree in Wildlife Ecology in the meantime, eating smoked salmon and studying grizzly bears on the coast of British Columbia.
