Hydraulics in Civil and Environmental Engineering by Aj Chadwick
This new edition of the undergraduate text combines fundamental theoretical concepts with design applications to provide comprehensive coverage of all the main aspects of hydraulics in civil and environmental engineering. The authors have incorporated the results of many of the recent advances in research and development which are currently finding their way into engineering practice. They have taken full advantage of the widespread availability of the computer in the presentation of computational modelling techniques and their application. The text incorporates a comprehensive set of worked examples to illustrate the uses of the theory, and problems and computer programs are appended. Part 1 introduces the theoretical concepts essential to hydraulic engineering. Hydrostatics, hydro-dynamics and flow in pipes and channels are all treated thoroughly. The authors then proceed to cover hydrology, sediment transport, wave theory, river and coastal engineering and water quality modelling. This provides a broad, holistic view of the subject, enabling the reader to envisage the complexity of real problems, and the design philosophies required for their solution.
Dr. John Chadwick was a classical scholar who served as an editor on the Oxford Latin Dictionary and who is internationally renowned for his contribution to the decipherment of the ancient Minoan script, Linear B. He was also a fellow of the British Academy and of Downing College, Cambridge. By the time of his retirement in 1984, he had become the fourth (and last) Perceval Maitland Laurence Reader in Classics at Cambridge. With Michael Ventris he published Documents in Mycenaean Greek (1956) and Evidence for Greek Dialect in the Mycenaean Archives in The Journal of Hellenic Studies (1956). He also wrote The Decipherment of Linear B (1958) and The Mycenaean World (1976). For the Swedenborg Society he translated six of Swedenborg's works, including The True Christian Religion and The Last Judgment. Dr. Jonathan S. Rose is a prodigious translator of Swedenborg and the series editor of the New Century edition of Swedenborg's works. Holder of a BA and a MDiv in religion and a MA and a PhD in Latin, he has worked for years in the study of Neo-Latin and in Swedenborgian research. For the Swedenborg Foundation he has translated True Christianity and has published numerous books and articles, including Swedenborg's Garden of Theology (2010). He was editor of and a contributor to Emanuel Swedenborg: Essays for the New Century Edition on His Life, Work, and Impact (2004).
