In Search of Small Gods by Jim Harrison

Funny and tender beneath a wry and gruff seen-it-all veneer, Harrison contemplates death, discerns divinity in every stone and leaf, and nobility in ordinary lives, and laughs at our attempts to separate ourselves from the rest of nature.--Booklist

His poems succeed on the basis of an open heart and a still-ravenous appetite for life.--The Texas Observer

Now in paperback, Jim Harrison's best-selling poetry book In Search of Small Gods is where birds and humans converse, autobiographies are fluid, and unknown gods flutter just out of sight. In terrains real and imagined--from remote canyons and anonymous thickets in the American West to secret basements in World War I Europe--Harrison calls upon readers to live fully in a world where Death steals everything except our stories.

Maybe the problem is that I got involved with the wrong crowd of
gods when I was seven. At first they weren't harmful and only showed
themselves as fish, birds, especially herons and loons, turtles, a bobcat
and a small bear, but not deer and rabbits who only offered themselves
as food. And maybe I spent too much time inside the water of
lakes and rivers. Underwater seemed like the safest church I could
go to . . .

Jim Harrison is one of America's most versatile and celebrated writers. He is the author of over thirty books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, including Legends of the Fall and Dalva. His work has been translated into two dozen languages. He lives in Arizona and Montana.

James Herbert Harrison was born in central Missouri and grew up in the southeast Missouri river town of Cape Girardeau. James was the oldest of three siblings, gaining from the strong exposure of Midwestern, patriotic values, his father's strong work ethic, and the strong moral influence of his mother. Foregoing college, James started his own business two days after turning twenty one years of age and after several years as a small businessman, relocated to Chicago and began a career in sales and marketing. Living and working in thirty eight states over the course of near thirty years, he has held various positions from street salesman to national sales management. An avid NRA member, James has extensive knowledge of American military history, specifically the civil war and civil war small arms. Having a conservative orientation politically, he is a supporter of the American Tea Party movement and strong proponent of the Fair Tax Bill. A constant consumer of political/military fiction thrillers, James has read the works of Frederick Forsythe, Tom Clancy, Larry Bond, and Brad Thor, to name a few. His favorite, the man whose story inspired his venture into fictional writing, is Vince Flynn, whom Harrison considers the contemporary master of the trade. James has a diverse alternative interest in automobile motor racing and has traveled nationally and internationally to over sixty major events. Residing currently in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, Kansas, Harrison lives with his wife, Maryna, and two year old son, Steven. He also has a twenty three year old son, Bill, who currently resides in Cape Girardeau.
