The Whopper by Rebecca Ashdown

A humorous, quirky story about a little boy who tells a lie, only to be followed around by his guilt in the form of The Whopper, a hungry and persistent monster. As Percy's guilt grows, so does The Whopper, until finally... The Whopper EATS Percy! It is only when The Whopper threatens to eat Percy's little brother, too, that Percy finally speaks out. An appealing and warm-hearted story about a little lie that turns into a big monster.

This is a brilliantly original and entertaining story, where the monster is the sort of monster we love to see in storiesHe's not cuddly, he's pretty much a revoltingly impolite monster who thinks nothing of scoffing little children (though he does so with a huge soppy whopper of a grin on his face). A very important moral lesson delivered with aplomb, we have a feeling this book is going to be a whopper itself!!

Charlotte's best bit: When the monster unceremoniously scoffs Percy. Eeeeeeek!

Daddy's Favourite bit: Tales of morality are hard to get right without them sounding preachy but Rebecca does a wonderful job in this fantastic, colourful and entertaining story!

-- Phil May * Read it Daddy! *
This is a great way to tackle the subject of telling those little white lies and instead telling the truth, especially when those lies can get out of hand. The visual representation of a monster is genius and the fact it takes over Percy's life explains how much it's taking over everything he does. Rebecca's illustrations are energetic and colourful and Grandma's knitted jumpers are hideous, so I don't really blame Percy for putting it on the dog! Overall a lovely humorous story with real heart that's great for the summer holidays. -- Catherine McDaid * Bookworm Baby *
A delightfully playful take on a serious topic that faces all children from time to time. Most of us know how that seemingly simple little lie can grow out of all proportion to become all-consuming, if the perpetrator doesn't own up. Rebecca Ashdown's illustrations bring that truth home in a deliciously humorous manner with images that will surely make young children think twice before they lie to get themselves out of trouble. -- Jill Bennett * Red Reading Hub *
Rebecca was born in Chichester, West Sussex and lived right by the sea for most of her childhood. As the youngest in a family of five, she grew up in a house full of healthy neglect, which enabled her (and her siblings) to spend a LOT of time either getting into scrapes or making things! When she wasn't playing on the beach, she chose (mostly) to do the latter. Drawing and writing was a real passion. She's sure having that creative freedom as a child gave her permission to do much the same in adulthood. Playing is important!
