The Complete Book of Vegetables, Herbs and Fruit by Matthew Biggs

This volume looks at over 1000 plants, providing: a history of where the plant comes from; a list of species to choose from; cultivation, propagation and harvesting details; and information on pests and diseases. It also features over 600 recipes.
An excellent compilation of three prestigious gardening books from three renowned gardeners, "The Complete Book of Vegetable, Herb and Fruit Growing" is a comprehensive, fully illustrated look at this aspect of gardeningAuthors Jekka McVicar, herb grower, Bob Flowerdew, organic gardener, and Matthew Biggs, all-round expert, share their many years of experience with the reader to give one of the most informative works on 'growing your own'. With todays concerns about the use of pesticides and other chemicals used to preserve 'freshness', many people are turning to allotments and their back gardens to grow their own produce, safe in the knowledge they are chemical free. Maybe not as perfectly shaped as shop-bought goods but far superior in taste. And the satisfaction of picking fresh beans or digging up your own new potatoes just before cooking makes the whole venture worthwhile. Including numerous recipes for the fruit, vegetables and herbs mentioned, this is an excellent all-rounder, sure to entice non-gardeners outside and give more advanced gardeners the incentive to grow more unusual crops. Full of hints, tips and cultivation advice, it deserves a place on every gardener's bookshelf. -- Lucy Watson
