The Deserter by Nelson Demille
A perilous, psychologically suspenseful military thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille--writing with his son, Alex DeMille--about two army officers on the hunt in Venezuela for an army deserter, whose current precarious circumstances might just overshadow his troubled past. When Captain Jason Carmody of the army's elite Delta Force seemingly deserted his post at a remote base in the Hindu Kush Mountains in Afghanistan three years ago, it made national headlines. The army launched intense around-the-clock searches for him, during which many American soldiers were killed by enemy forces. Six months later, a hostage video was released by the Taliban, demanding the army trade a high-ranking Taliban commander in exchange for Carmody. The US didn't comply and another two years passed without anyone hearing of Jason Carmody ever again. But when a former soldier spots Carmody on business overseas, the army calls in their best to investigate: warrant officers Scott Brodie, an intelligent renegade agent with little respect for authority, and Courtney Taylor, a detail-oriented stickler who is Brodie's foil in more ways than one. This unlikely duo is charged with tracking down Carmody and bringing him home from the last place he was seen alive--Caracas, Venezuela, the murder capital of the world. It soon becomes clear that Brodie and Taylor will have to put procedural differences aside to uncover the true mystery of Carmody's past. And what they unearth might prove that the most mysterious facet of Carmody's life isn't his desertion, but what he's up to now. In The Deserter, Nelson DeMille and his son Alex DeMille together bring to life the brutal streets of Caracas as our heroes follow a path of twists and turns, told with the signature impact, nail-biting plotting, and expert pacing only a DeMille can execute.
