Family Fortunes by John Drane

Family Fortunes acknowledges the particular challenges facing today’s families and seeks new and creative possibilities for nurturing faith in today’s communities. The family is variously regarded as either a key building block of society, or as an institution long past its sell-by date. It is certainly not what it was: families now come in all shapes and sizes. How can we make sense of this in the context of spiritually caring for one another? And how in today’s world can we use the inherited insights of the Christian tradition without seeking to turn the clock back? John and Olive Drane start from where today’s families find themselves – their everyday struggles, as well as their opportunities. In acknowledging the diversity of family life, and the particular challenges this brings, they open up new possibilities for nurturing faith in today’s communities.
Drane, John: -

John Drane is a theologian who is probably best known for his two best-selling books on the Bible, Introducing the Old Testament and Introducing the New Testament. He studied in the University of Aberdeen where he was a student of I. Howard Marshall, and he holds a PhD from the University of Manchester, where his mentor was F. F. Bruce. His doctoral research focused on Gnosticism in relation to early Christian thought and practice. This interest in esoteric spirituality later became a bridge between his study of the Bible and his concern for Christian mission, with particular reference to cultural change and the emergence of New Spirituality.
