Funeral Music by Morag Joss

International cellist Sara Selkirk is apprehensive about the charity concert in Bath's famous Pump Room. It's the first time she will have performed in public since the death of her lover the previous year. But, in the event, Sara's performance is overshadowed by the death of the concert's organiser, Matthew Sawyer. In the ensuing police investigation, many secrets are uncovered including a stolen needlework collection, an immigration racket, a headmaster's adulterous affair with his secretary. What, if anything, do any of them have to do with Sawyer's death?
'An exceptionally accomplished first novel, worthy of comparison with Ruth Rendell.. FUNERAL MUSIC goes on resonating in my head like one of those tunes you can't quite identify - always the sign of a successful mystery' -- Bel Mooney, The Times 'It is always a pleasure to welcome a new and exciting talent to British crime writing, and Morag Joss's distinguished debut demonstrates all the virtues which will make this book a winner: an interesting setting, characters drawn with wit and perception, good writing and a plot which combines tension with credibility. I look forward to her next with happy confidence' -- P D JAMES 'An intriguing set-up ... A good, old-fashioned story' -- The Times 'The skilful plotting, strong sense of place and colourful but credible characters would alone mark this book out. What makes it not only convincing crime wirting but also a fine novel is its lively sense of social comedy and sharp wit' -- Good Book Guide
