Home in the Rain by Bob Graham

Waiting out a storm by the highway inspires a name for an unborn baby sister in a tender, exquisitely observed tale from the incomparable Bob Graham.

The rain is pouring down in buckets, and Francie and her mom are on their way home from Grandma's. As the little red car pulls into a picnic area to wait out the storm, the windows fog up, and Francie spells out Dad, Mom, and Francie with her finger. But the back window is waiting for another name, that of Francie's soon-to-arrive baby sister. What should they call her? Francie and her mother ponder this as they return to the road. Later, when they stop to fill up with gas, who will notice one mother lost in thought and a small girl dancing? Once again, as only he can, Bob Graham elevates a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment into a sublime tale full of nuance and heart.

Bob Graham was elected governor of Florida in 1978 after serving in the Florida Assembly for 12 years. Graham was globally acclaimed for improvements in education, environmental preservation, and economic diversification during his two tenure as governor. Graham had an 83 percent approval rating from the people of Florida at the end of his two terms as governor. Graham was elected to the US Senate in 1986 and served three terms in a row. He was a leader on health, trade, tax, water, and infrastructure issues as a member of the Senate Finance, Environment and Public Works, and Veterans Affairs Committees.

Graham's most significant contribution occurred when he was named head of the Select Committee on Intelligence during his final Senate term. He co-chaired the Joint Investigation into Intelligence Community Activities Before and After the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001, as a Senator, and co-sponsored the bill to create the Director of National Intelligence position. Graham gained international notoriety in 2016 when he urged President Obama to declassify and make public 28 pages of the final Joint Inquiry report that had been redacted. Graham also wrote the books Intelligence Matters in 2004 and Keys to the Kingdom in 2011, both of which exposed severe flaws in the United States.

system of national security Graham's workdays are maybe his most well-known feature. During his nearly 30 years as Governor of Florida and U.S. Senator, he campaigned for and served in both positions. Senator Graham worked with Floridians in over 400 jobs.

His first day on the job was at Carol City High School in Miami Gardens, Florida, where he taught citizenship. In his debut book, Workdays: Discovering Florida on the Job, Graham detailed his experiences. Graham has led national commissions on weapons of mass destruction, the BP oil spill, and funding public higher education since leaving the Senate in early 2005. He was a senior fellow at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government for the 2005-2006 school year.

Graham remains the chair of the Florida Conservation Coalition, which works to safeguard the environment. Former Governor of New York and U.S. Senator With the Bob Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida, Senator Graham leads efforts to improve citizen involvement and prepare the next generation of public leaders.
