Martyn Turner's Greatest Hits by Martyn Turner
Martyn Turner once stated that the most difficult thing about being a cartoonist was convincing your wife that you were working when you were staring out the window. Turner has been staring out the window since 1972, with results that have delighted readers of The Irish Times (and other newspapers). He has established himself quite simply as the Irish cartoonist of his generation. Martyn Turner's Greatest Hits is a selection of the very best of his work over the thirty-one years of his career to date. The cartoons are his own favourites from his vast collection: they form an alternative history of our time. And they are a lot more cheerful than the official history: even the blackest, most mordant humour in some of these brilliant cartoons is a counterpoint to what has sometimes been a very bleak reality indeed.
Martyn Turner has not been a short-order cook, deck hand on a leaky trawler, pianist in a brothel, failed rock star, or counter-intelligence agent. He has just spent the last thirty-odd years drawing silly pictures and making people laugh.
