Bernadine Evaristo writes as a Black British woman reaching out to embrace a vision of the world not defined by Europe or by patriarchy. In poems which are rich in image and bold in language, she celebrates those who resist confinement and enrich life. At the heart of the collection is a suite of poems which explore the life-enhancing and disturbing experience of a journey to Madagascar. Bernardine Evaristo honestly and movingly recreates the personal dramas of feeling both alien and at home, of being a Black woman in an African country where she felt both part and apart.

Bernardine Evaristo works as an arts administrator, critic and theatre co-ordinator. In addition to Island of Abraham, she has published the verse novels Lara and The Emperor's Babe.
