Big Plans, Small Gardens by Andy Sturgeon
The book is divided into three main sections. Assessing Your Needs encourages the reader to focus on their requirements and to determine their priorities in terms of making the most of their space. Solutions by Area looks at a range of different spaces from balconies to basements, rooftops to courtyards, and highlights the particular considerations of each. This chapter also illustrates inspiring design ideas, always focusing on the practical, for example, 'Do you want to make the most of your view or do you need to screen off an eyesore?'. Design Details focuses on elements such as walls, flooring, lighting, and furniture. Feature boxes and text offer design advice and planting suggestions, and clarify what is achievable through DIY and what needs a professional. They also include low-maintenance and drought-friendly ideas.
Andy Sturgeon is one of the country's leading garden designers whose modern designs are a fusion of traditional materials and contemporary styling. A Chelsea gold-medal winner, Andy worked at The RHS Gardens Wisley and as a landscape gardener before graduating from the Welsh College of Horticulture in 1987. He has since been a freelance garden designer with his projects frequently featured on television, in magazines and national newspapers at home and overseas. Andy has been included in House and Garden magazine's exclusive list of the top 50 designers in Britain and his work is also featured in BBC2's Small Town Gardens series. He presented BBC's Chelsea coverage for three years in a row, and for several years was the resident gardener on GMTV. Andy is a garden writer for the Guardian and was previously columnist with the Daily Mail, Daily Express and Sunday Times.
