Designing Stage Costumes by Gary Thorne

This volume is aimed at anyone faced with the opportunity to design costumes for stage. It explains the role of the costume designer from understanding the script to realising ideas on paper and in fabric. Some of the topics covered include: art and design materials; foundations of art and design with exercises to develop drawing skills; script and character analysis for costume and location setting; understanding theatre production process; how to approach historical and modern dress productions; theatre and production type; and finally, fabric dictionary for textiles and their terms.
Gary Thomas Thorne MA studied at London's Byam Shaw School of Art before taking Margaret Harris's Motley Theatre Design Course in 1983. His excellent reviews for imaginative design for small-scale touring led to designing for repertory theatre in Canada, England and France. Gary has also written Stage Design - a practical guide for Crowood [1999].
