Norfolk's War by Frank Meeres

The aim of this book is to capture the experiences of Norfolk men and women during the First World War in their own words, and using never-before-published images. It uses letters, diaries and journals made at the time, together with later reminiscences, both written and oral, to build a vivid picture of what life was like for our ancestors and this key time in our history: everybody was affected by the First World War. The book looks at Norfolk men serving on the Western Front, and elsewhere in the world, including in Gallipoli and at sea. Norfolk was in the front line in the war. It was one of the areas where air raids were most common and where a German invasion was expected by many. Norfolk women played a vital part in the war and their experiences are an important part of the book nurses served in the Mediterranean and in France, as well as in hospitals and convalescent homes in England. Others worked in munitions and other factories, often replacing men, and many women worked on the land, helping provide essential food. All these experiences are recalled in this book.Daily life is also considered food shortages, rationing, blackouts all precursors of what was to happen again a generation later and everyday life in Norfolk towns and villages in this unique time in our history.
Frank Meeres is a well-known local author. He has worked for many years at the Norfolk Record Office and is a prominent local historian. Norfolk was a hotbed of suffragette activity, and this motivated Frank to explore the history of the movement on a national level. He lives in Norwich.
