Stories from Native North America by Linda Raczek
This work collects stories from Native American tradition and retells them for children. The storyteller is based at the Ute Mountain Tribe reservation and the artist is a member of the Dine people, working in the artistic tradition of Native North America. The book combines ghost stories, creation myths, hero stories, traditional tales and tales in a modern setting. The "Multicultural Stories" stories brings together storytellers and artists to retell tales from around the world. Each title contains colourful artwork, but also allows plenty of space for the text, so that the richness of the different oral traditions is able to come out. Each story is introduced by a short information section that tells the reader about the place and people from which the story comes, and allows children to put the story into context.
This series provides a good introduction to the wealth of stories to be found around the world, and would make a good addition to a primary school library-- Armadillo, Autumn 00 Desirable and collectable [...] What makes them work is their integrity and synergy as a series. [...] These stories cannot fail to stimulate your child's imagination and sense of wonder. -- Children's books in Ireland, Dec 00 A delightful collection [...] The illustrations are beautifully researched and executed, with many details. [...] This book would be an excellent addition to the myths and legends section of a children's library. -- The School Librarian, Winter 00 The selection of stories is interesting, and these books would be of great value in class. -- Books in schools 2000, Issue 82
