The Accidental Santera by Irete Lazo
Gabrielle Segovia never imagined she would become a santera. She's never even heard of the word. As a scientist and college professor, she struggles to build a career as a Latina academic while coping with three unexplained miscarriages. Then, fate leads her to a French Quarter voodoo shop. When the predictions from her on-a-whim reading start to come true, Gabrielle discovers she hails from a long line of practitioners of Santeria, the religion created when Yoruba slaves combined their ancient rituals with Catholicism. With fear but also hope, she turns to the Puerto Rican relatives she hasn't seen since she was a child, and is unexpectedly marked for initiation by the gods and goddesses of the Yoruba pantheon. Gabrielle's journey into this new mystical world is hilarious, heart-wrenching and, ultimately, triumphant.
