The author draws on her experiences traveling around the world in the late '50's to tell this story of a teenager's post World War Two adventures. Anna's day dream of adventure becomes a reality when her mother remarries and her newly acquired, Quaker activist, Aunt Nettie, invites her to spend the summer touring Britain staying in youth hostels. On the voyage across the Atlantic Anna enjoys making friends with her fellow passengers. Nettie, however, finds herself plagued by flashbacks of her time in the French Resistance and as a prisoner of the Nazi's. The women's adventures get off to a rocky start when an anonymous threat is slipped under their door in London. The mysterious treats become increasingly ugly. As they try to elude their unknown pursuer, Nettie encounters the French lover she thought had been killed in the war and Anna falls in love with an Aussie cowboy she met on the ship.
