The Fourth Wise Man by Mary Joslin
This legend seems to originate in France. In it, the fourth wise man is unable to decide what gift is worthy of the child who is God’s chosen king. He travels with the three wise men bringing gold, frankincense and myrrh, but fails to think of a suitable gift. He is so ashamed of himself, that he waits outside the house when the others go to give their offerings to the baby Jesus. To make himself useful, he draws water for all the camels. Then he notices that the star that has led their way is reflected in his bucket. He carries it inside the house - and by a miracle it keeps on shining - a reminder that all we humans can offer is a reflection of God’s own glory.
Mary Joslin is married and has 3 grown up children. She began writing when her own children were still young and has since written books that have been published throughout the world. For Lion these include Our Father, The Tale of the Heaven Tree, Do the Angels Watch Close By?, The Merchant Enticed by the Pearl of Great Price and The Story of the Cross. She likes kayaking, canoeing and gardening. Richard Johnson graduated with a degree in illustration from Loughborough University of Art and Design in 1999 andcurrently lives in Lincolnshire. Creating imagery for children of all ages is a particular passion of Richard's. His illustrations can be seen in many books, including Aesop's Fables, If Elephants Wore Trousers, Around the World in Eighty Tales, The Peter Pan Jigsaw Book, and My Grandpa's Amazing Inventions.
