Seven Years by Peter Stamm

Alex is caught between two very different women. Sonia, his wife, is intelligent, beautiful, charming and ambitious and together they have established a successful architectural firm and a life of easy luxury. But in the background is Ivona, who is dull, plain and passive. The only thing she offers Alex is her love, unconditionally, which inspires in him a queasy mixture of repulsion and passion. Alex knows he must make a choice, but when Ivona becomes pregnant, life takes an unexpected turn which leaves him more puzzled than ever by the mysteries of desire.
One of Europe's most exciting writers * New York Times *
It's so cleanly written, it's philosophically interesting, yet not for a moment does it sacrifice drama, character [or] storyIt's like a beautifully made Le Corbusier house inside of which are hidden some very ugly, but honest, things -- Zadie Smith
How many writers have written with this degree of brutal perceptiveness and wisdom about the indeterminate depths of heterosexual desire? Wharton, Roth (sometimes), James Salter, Kundera. Stamm inscribes his name on that august list. Quietly shattering -- Neel Mukherjee * The Times *
In hypnotically cool prose, deftly translated by Michael Hofmann, Stamm explores the implications of a love triangle over the course of 20 years. This disturbing novel houses some brutal truths -- Emma Hagestadt * Independent *
Stamm writes in the leanest prose imaginable, telling stories about phobic characters in love with routine, in need of protection, but simultaneously anxious that life might be passing them by -- Tim Parks
The search for love, the pursuit of happiness, the confusion of emotions, Peter Stamm revisits these eternal themes in an original novel that resonates deeply with all of us * Elle *
Cool, incisively told and deeply, unsettlingly strange, Seven Years held me, gripped me -- Julie Myerson
Quietly spectacular * New Yorker *
There is something irresistible about this skilfully constructed zeitgeist story. * Laissez Faire London *
Oh my, what a beautiful book ... With its tracing-paper like dust-jacket and monochrome photograph cover image printed directly onto the boards I was smitten immediately ... The icy coldness of the book's outer shell is replicated inside with Stamm's clear and uninflected prose and the emotional detachment of the characters ... it is a brave and unsettling read that questions how we relate, feel desire and find fulfilment * Just William’s Luck *
Seven Years is a novel to make you doubt your own dogma. What more can a novel do than that? -- Zadie Smith
Depiction of the human condition and the unholy mess we can make when we drift along, never considering the consequences of our actions. So absorbed was I that I never even noticed the lack of parenthesis around the speech or the many changes of speaker within the same paragraph. The language simply flows beautifully * Lizzy’s Literary Life *
