That's Not Fair, Hare! by Julie Sykes

Greedy Hare doesn't want to share the farmer's cabbages with Mug's the tortoise so challenges her to a race - the first to reach the field from Hare's home can have all the cabbages he/she wants. The race begins and Mug's friends try to help by suggesting quicker ways of moving, but they all end in trouble. Mug's is so busy rescuing Rabbit from a ditch and Squirrel from a bush that she has no chance of winning the race. But her opportunity comes as she sees Hare having a nap. Just as she's about to creep past him and win, Rabbit and Squirrel spoil everything again by waking Hare up so that he goes on to win the race. Mug's has a surprise in store when she suggests Hare races her home - and of course, Mug's home is right there on her back!
